Everyday Sunday – “Wake Up! Wake Up!” live at The Center in Port Huron, MI

Picture 2

Everyday Sunday in Concert by Brent Christy

My friend Jason is a youth pastor and also the manager of the venue The Center near where we great in Port Huron,MI. He asked me to shoot the band Everyday Sunday who came through this past weekend. They are a solid group of dudes.

There were quite a few problems with this project when I got into the edit bay. The song that this was supposed to be about had terrible audio, the venue itself was very dark which lead to the heavy artifacting you see on the digital compression, and I had to mix and match a few scenes I hadn’t intended to.But the final product has the upbeat feel I was looking for.

Be on the lookout for future collabs between Jason and I. There are a few possibilities down the pipe.

As usual, clicking on the “Personal Projects” Category link or searching “Video Post” in my tags will take you to previously posted videos (with a little behind the scenes information.) You can also take a mouse cursor drag over to the right column to find a direct link to my Vimeo. Or click that link back there a few words ago.

The man comes full circle

The Man Comes Around"

The Johnny Cash album “American IV: The Man Comes Around” has been blowing my mind this week. To hear the anthems of a guy in his 70’s is powerful. I love gleaning knowledge from people who have actually traveled the many roads and byways of life and have some advice to give on the good and the bad.

I think what adds to the compassion of this project is that Cash only wrote a handful of the songs. The rest are covers from fan favorites like The Beatles and Sting, and stretching to more diverse acts like Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails. It’s like he can take the feelings that these other artists were feeling when they wrote their respective songs, and put them though a wise journeyman’s viewfinder.

If your a fan of music, adventures and journeys, I recommend making these recordings a part of your life.

Top 10 albums of my life

Without any specific order, without any specific reason. The ten best albums, start to finish, that have graced my ears. Alot of newer stuff. Mostly alternative. All awesome. Im hurting to leave some valuables out by Queen, The Who, Mutemath, Weezer, Paul Simon, Derek Webb, Norma Jean and Jimmy Needham. Much respect to them too. But come on, these albums helped define my life! Brought me to that level of musical ecstacy!

  1. Blindside – “The Great Depression”
  2. Phantom Planet – Self-titled second album
  3. Jimmy Eat World – “Bleed American”
  4. Bare Naked Ladies – “Greatest hits volume 1″
  5. He is Legend – “I am Hollywood”
  6. Emery – “The Question”
  7. Foo Fighters – “There is nothing left to lose”
  8. Anberlin – “Blue Prints for the Black Market”
  9. The Hives – “Tyrannasaurus Hives”
  10. The White Stripes – “Elephant”

Man that was tough. It’s flexible though. It could change next week. How dare I confine music like this.

Kriss Kross makes me wanna jump

You won’t want to.

I like The Rocket Summer. That style I usually stray from, and maybe I’ll break the sampler cd I have him on next week, but it’s enjoyable. He reminds me of the lead singer of Calibretto 13, and I would probably buy this cd if it really was him, so I figure it would just be prejudice not to like it even though he’s not that dude, and sounds like a 6th grade girl. Cartel and Copeland are good bands too. I didn’t like them at first, but The Postal Service plays some hot beats also. I’ve strayed from my staunch heavy edged musical roots and gone mainstream. But I think it’s important to keep a musically open mind, it’s too beautiful a thing to stick to one genre.

Some days you just can’t get rid of a bomb.

Tomorrow H&H is shooting its first full production, Bloodshed Union has signed it’s first band, Brandon will be back with footage from his New Orleans for our video production endeavor and I’m surrounded by people whom I love, and who love me.

I pray I don’t lose my head in these times of success and joy, but at the same time I’m very happy…more than happy actually, full-out joy, doing what I love and pursuing things with passion, and fulfilling a purpose. And I know that it all could be over tomorrow, but it won’t take away the fact that I’ve been part of something that is bigger than myself. And I contest you can not find true happiness and joy until you are doing something larger than the small existence you and I live.

“Do you know that the harder thing to do and the right thing to do are usually the same thing? Nothing that has meaning is easy. “Easy” doesn’t enter into grown-up life.”

You can lead a horse to water, but making him drink is another mountain

Paul McCartney turns 64 this coming year. I wonder what he’ll be thinking that day, and I wonder how different it will be from what he was thinking when he wrote the song “When I’m 64″ about 40 years ago. I hope he’s happy. He’s the richest musician in the history of history. I wonder if that even counts for anything to him. I hope there are people in his life that really love him and make him realize that without them his millions are toilet paper and his status is yesterday (when all his troubles seemed so far away).

Last week, Mark, Joe and I were on air at the college radio station (WSGR 91.3, St. Clair County Community College’s own FM station) and we were talking about an article in the Erie Square Gazette about morality and religion, and the question came up “Does morality stem from religion?” and I think the answer is no. Religion is just a man made system to praise God. Morality stems from God, as we are granted the choice between good and evil at birth. Although I feel religion is important, I think it’s moreso guidelines as how to worship Christ and build a relationship with Him, not a crutch.

I’m not right about things. And I think it’s good for me to know that. I do think love conquers all though. I think I can stand by that. And that no one is an “idiot” or “stupid” as a defining characteristic, that we all have moments of unclarity and clumsitude. Love your neighbor as yourself goes a long way.

How do you like that? Three seperate posts and one made up word all in one!

An avalanche in D Minor

I’m all for emotional expression in music. I love to see somebody, whether in black metal or in polka, really get into there brand of music, and really show what it means to them, and to see the symphony in their eyes thats playing in their soul.

But smashing instruments?! Come on! I always wince a little, maybe a little piece of me dies inside everytime I witness the massacre of a stratocastor. Maybe I’m too cheap, or too materialistic, but hey, thats a perfectly good guitar.

I feel like that’s only the beginning of a term paper, cause that’s all I got now. But it’s true.

Doctor Doctor, Mr. M-D, Don’t tell me what’s in my gut, I know it’s Patriotism!

You ever bowl a 78? Yeah, ha ha, me neither….

Let’s all go see Dave Chappelle’s “Block Party” next week. I’m not joking around. But he usually is. He was on Screen Actors Guild with James Lipton the other night, and I wanna see it.

I love comedy and funny. Do you know how much not awesome things would be without funny? Make sure you laugh extra hard today when your Grandma slips on the pavement.

I’m kidding! have a heart and help her up, she’s your grandma! Are you inconsiderate?!

I think I’m in love

I fell in love with music all over again tonight. It wasn’t just googly eyes either. It’s like that feeling you have with your significant other, where it’s a day you just both realize you love eachother so bad. And it’s not an anniversary or Christmas or anything, it’s just one of those spontaneous days, so you know it’s for real. I just got back from Stretch Armstrong, Haste the Day, Still Remains and Kane Hodder. The mosh pit was like a beautiful slowdance. Like my boy Johnny said, every breakdown was in tune and perfect rhythm with your heartbeat. Amazing.
